Emil Jannings works as a doorman at the ‘Atlantic’ Hotel, wearing a gleaming uniform. He takes great pride in his uniform. Back home, his niece Maly Delschaft marries Hans Hiller. But Jannings is getting on in years. As a result, the hotel manager, Hans Unterkirchner, transfers him to the basement, where he is forced to work as a toilet attendant in a white smock. To avoid losing face at home, Jannings steals his old uniform and takes it home with him. A relative wants to visit him whilst he is on duty, and the deception is soon exposed in the working-class neighbourhood where he lives. People mock him. Yet Jannings inherits the fortune of a millionaire who took a liking to him. He throws a party at the hotel and invites Georg John, the night watchman, to join him. Silent film.
A silent film icon. At the time, what was remarkable about this film was the unrestrained camerawork and the fact that it did without intertitles. The former is irrelevant today, and the latter meant that the story had to be very simple. Consequently, Jannings’ performance is not characterisation but pantomime, and everything comes across as very artificial.
