Brombach bei Lörrach, 1941. Der polnische Zwangsarbeiter Piotr Lysak (Stanislaw Zasada) liebt die deutsche Gemüsehändlerin Hanna Schygulla (Pauline Kopp). Die Affäre wird bekannt. Schygulla muß ins KZ, Lysak wird hingerichtet.

Aus der Perspektive des Sohns 40 Jahre später rekonstruiert und erzählt, haben Wajda und Hochhuth dem bemerkenswerten Stoff das Format einer Hintertreppengeschichte verpaßt, verbunden mit der Antischauspielkunst, die in den 80er Jahren im deutschen Film als chic galt.
