Der gebieterische Ruf

Wien. Bei dem berühmten Chirurgen Rudolf Forster (Hofrat Prof. Dr. Ernst Wichmann) spricht die junge Ärztin Maria Holst (Dr. Christiane Exner) vor. Er erinnert sich sofort an die Assistenzärztin aus Graz, die ihn seinerzeit sehr beeindruckt hatte. Forster engagiert Holst; kurz darauf nimmt sie seinen Heiratsantrag an. Die Hochzeitsreise wird für Forster unterbrochen, der nach Wien zum Fall des Schauspielers Paul Hubschmid (Ferdinand Hofer) muss. Ihn betreut er vor der Operation auch privat. So sehen Holst und Hubschmid sich wieder. In Graz waren sie ein Liebespaar, bis Hubschmid ein Engagement nach Berlin annahm – und nichts mehr von sich hören ließ. Doch sie liebt ihn noch immer. Als Forster das erfährt, will er zunächst die lebensnotwendige Operation an Hubschmid nicht mehr machen. Doch er besinnt sich eines Besseren. Er operiert erfolgreich und gibt Holst für Hubschmid frei.

Menschen, die so in der Wirklichkeit nicht existieren, sondern sämtlich Überhöhungen sind – diesen Trost spendete der Film jenen, die ihn in damals trüben Verhältnissen sahen. Welch hoher Wert hier, mitten im nichtgezeigten Krieg, einem Leben beikommt! Eine simple Geschichte, ein auch für seine Freunde schwer erträglicher Rudolf Forster, und ein Happyend in Edelmut.

Vienna. The famous surgeon Rudolf Forster (Hofrat Prof. Dr. Ernst Wichmann) is approached by the young doctor Maria Holst (Dr. Christiane Exner). He immediately remembers the assistant doctor from Graz, who had impressed him very much at the time. Forster engages Holst; shortly afterwards she accepts his marriage proposal. The honeymoon is interrupted for Forster, who has to go to Vienna for the case of the actor Paul Hubschmid (Ferdinand Hofer). He also looks after him privately before the operation. So Holst and Hubschmid see each other again. In Graz they were lovers until Hubschmid accepted an engagement to Berlin – and never let her hear from him again. But she still loves him. When Forster learns of this, he initially does not want to perform the vital operation on Hubschmid. But he thinks better of it. He operates successfully and releases Holst for Hubschmid.

People who do not exist like this in reality, but are all exaggerations – this is the consolation the film gave to those who saw it in the bleak circumstances of the time. What a high value is attached to a life here, in the middle of a war that is not shown! A simple story, a Rudolf Forster who was hard to bear even for his fans, and a happy ending in nobleness.
