Der General

Marietta, Georgia, Frühling 1861. Die Unionstruppen des amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges rücken näher, und Buster Keaton (Johnny Gray), Lokomotivführer bei der ‚Western & Atlantic Railroad‘, will sich freiwillig zur Armee melden, um den Respekt seiner Liebsten Marion Mack (Annabelle Lee) nicht zu verlieren. Man nimmt ihn nicht – als Lokomotivführer ist er wichtiger. Frühling 1862. Ein getarnter Trupp Unionssoldaten entführt Keatons Lokomotive ‚The General‘, um auf ihrem Weg an der Bahnlinie gelegene Infrastruktur zu zerstören. Keaton nimmt die Verfolgung auf, erst zu Fuß, dann mit ‚Texas‘, der Lokomotive, die er unterwegs findet. Er muss auf dem Gebiet der Nordstaaten aufgeben und landet in einem Gut, in dem er die Vorstoß-Pläne der Feinde belauscht – und Mack als Gefangene vorfindet, die in dem geraubten Zug war. Er verhilft Mack zur Flucht, warnt daheim vor den Angriffsplänen und wird Leutnant in der Armee. Stummfilm.

Weil er eine Komödie drehen wollte, durfte Buster Keaton nicht die Original-Lokomotive verwenden, die tatsächlich 1862 von den Nordstaaten entführt worden war und die es bis heute gibt. Doch hat Keaton eine Komödie gedreht? Er zeigt einen sehr ernsthaften Mann, der mit Arbeit und Liebe nicht spasst und der zwischen die Räder der kämpfenden Parteien gerät. Und er zeigt Sinn fürs groteske Detail. Man schaut stets gebannt auf das Bild, aber Keaton, anders als Chaplin, zeigt nur eine distanzierte Wärme, und die gilt der Lokomotive. Mit diesem Verständnis ein großartiger Film.

Marietta, Georgia, spring 1861. The Union troops of the American Civil War are approaching, and Buster Keaton (Johnny Gray), a locomotive engineer on the ‚Western & Atlantic Railroad‘, wants to volunteer for the army so as not to lose the respect of his sweetheart Marion Mack (Annabelle Lee). He is not accepted – he is more important as an engineer. In the spring of 1862, a disguised squad of Union soldiers hijacks Keaton’s locomotive ‚The General‘ in order to destroy infrastructure along the railway line. Keaton takes up the pursuit, first on foot, then with ‚ Texas‘, the locomotive he finds on the way. He has to give up in Northern territory and ends up at an estate where he overhears the enemy’s advance plans – and finds Mack a prisoner who was on the stolen train. He helps Mack escape, warns at home of the attack plans and becomes a lieutenant in the army. Silent film.

Because he wanted to make a comedy, Buster Keaton was not allowed to use the original locomotive, which had actually been hijacked by the Northerners in 1862 and still exists today. But was Keaton making a comedy? He shows a very serious man who doesn’t spare work and love and who gets caught between the wheels of the fighting parties. And he shows a sense for grotesque detail. You always look at the picture spellbound, but Keaton, unlike Chaplin, only shows a detached warmth, and that is for the locomotive. With this understanding, a great film.
