Verona Juli 1961. Die Übersetzerin Monica Vitti (Vittoria) hat ihre Affäre mit Francisco Rabal (Riccardo) beendet und lernt Alain Delon (Piero), den jungen Börsenhändler kennen. Die beiden beginnen eine Affäre, aber innerlich ist ihnen klar, daß auch das kein dauerndes Glück verheißt.

Distanziert und kühl photographiert und inszeniert, in seelenlosen Wohnburgen und fast ohne Musik: Antonioni hat keine Hoffnung für seine Figuren, arrangiert diese traurige Botschaft fast maniriert.
