Highbury, Surrey, England ca. 1910. Anya  Taylor-Joy (Emma Woodhouse), 20, lebt mit ihrem Vater Bill Nighy auf Hartfield und arrangiert gerne Ehen. Ihre Freundin Mia Goth (Harriet Smith) verlobt sie mit Pfarrer Josh O’Connor (Mr. Elton). Ihr distanzierter Bekannter Johnny Flynn (Mr. Knightly) mißbilligt ihr Verhalten.  Jener O’Connor macht Taylor-Joy einen Heiratsantrag – den sie zurückweist. Sie hatte ihn zutiefst mißverstanden. Er tröstet sich und heiratet Tanya Reynolds (Augusta).  Amber Anderson (Jane Fairfax) und der charmante Callum Turner (Frank Churchill) kommen zu Besuch. Es wird ein Ball gegeben. Flynn rettet mehrfach die Situation. Goth bekennt Taylor-Joy Verliebtheit. Diese gilt, wie sich herausstellt, Flynn. Doch der macht endlich Taylor-Joy einen Antrag und die nimmt ihn an. .

Der feste Vorsatz, ein optisches Kunstwerk zu schaffen, wurde konsequent umgesetzt und  in dieser Beziehung ist der Film gelungen. Die Perfektion der Optik macht aber die altkluge Trivialität der Geschichte von Austen umso deutlicher. Die Regisseurin Autumn de Wilde hat einen Hintergrund als Photographin, nicht als Dramatikerin.

Highbury, Surrey, England, circa 1910. Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma Woodhouse), 20, lives with her father Bill Nighy at Hartfield and enjoys arranging marriages. Her friend Mia Goth (Harriet Smith) is engaged to Reverend Josh O’Connor (Mr Elton). Her distant acquaintance Johnny Flynn (Mr Knightly) disapproves of her behaviour. O’Connor proposes to Taylor-Joy – she rejects him. She had deeply misunderstood him. He consoles himself and marries Tanya Reynolds (Augusta).  Amber Anderson (Jane Fairfax) and the charming Callum Turner (Frank Churchill) come to visit. A ball is held. Flynn saves the day several times. Goth confesses her love to Taylor-Joy. It turns out that this love is for Flynn. But he finally proposes to Taylor-Joy and she accepts.

The firm intention to create a visual work of art was consistently implemented, and in this respect the film is a success. However, the perfection of the visuals makes the precocious triviality of Austen’s story all the more apparent. Director Autumn de Wilde has a background as a photographer, not as a playwright.
