Der Mann aus Virginia

Medicine Bow, Wyoming: Gary Cooper (The Virginian), Ranch-Vorarbeiter, trifft seinen alten Freund Freund Richard Arlen (Steve) in der Stadt und gibt ihm einen Job auf der Ranch. Als die neue Lehrerin der Schule, Mary Brian (Molly Stark Wood), eintrifft, entspinnt sich zwischen ihr und Cooper eine Romanze.  Angestiftet von Walter Huston (Trampas), stiehlt Arlen mit zwei anderen Vieh von der Ranch. Sie werden ertappt und Cooper ist beim Lynchen seines Freundes dabei. Das trägt ihm einen Konflikt mit Brian ein. Entgegen ihrem Protest stellt sich Cooper auch noch einem Schußwechsel  mit Huston, den er in der Stadt tötet.

1914 und 1923 schon einmal verfilmt, bietet dieser Stoff über Freundschaft, wesentlich nüchterner gesehen als bei Howard Hawks, eine Paraderolle für Gary Cooper, die ihn definierte. Daß er hier mehr sprechen muß als später, liegt in der Dialog-Verliebheit früher Tonfilme. Randolph Scott, in Virginia geboren, lehrte Cooper den Dialekt.

Medicine Bow, Wyoming: Gary Cooper (The Virginian), a ranch foreman, meets his old friend Richard Arlen (Steve) in town and gives him a job on the ranch. When the new schoolteacher, Mary Brian (Molly Stark Wood), arrives, a romance develops between her and Cooper.  Instigated by Walter Huston (Trampas), Arlen steals cattle from the ranch with two others. They are caught and Cooper is present when his friend is lynched. This causes a conflict with Brian. Despite her protests, Cooper also engages in a shootout with Huston, whom he kills in town.

Already filmed in 1914 and 1923, this story about friendship, seen in a much more sober light than Howard Hawks did, offers a showcase role for Gary Cooper that defined him. The fact that he has to speak more here than later is due to the dialogue-loving nature of early sound films. Randolph Scott, born in Virginia, taught Cooper the dialect.
